Anusara Yoga,
founded by John Friend, is a unique approach to hatha yoga where the spirit of the HEART powerfully blends with the precision of biomechanical ALIGNMENT and balanced energetic ACTION in the performance of asanas (yoga postures).

The word "anusara" originates from a line in the Tantric text called the Kularnava Tantra, "shaktipata-anusarena shishyonugraham arhati", which means: by entering the current of Divine Shakti's descent into the heart, the true disciple becomes capable of receiving grace. Anusara literally means to be in the flow. It is the current of the Divine, to flow with Grace. The philosophical basis of Anusara, as elucidated by Dr. Douglas Brooks, is called Rajanaka Yoga.

KULA, the subject of
this spring's immersion at VIRAYOGA,
is a Sanskrit word with many definitions:
community
family
heart
embodied Self
innermost essence

this concept of the kula as
our body, our heart, our community, our heritage/lineage
is central to the philosophical underpinnings
of Anusara Yoga, the study of Rajanaka Tantra.

the kula is also the company we choose to keep inwardly and outwardly.

in classes we come together as a kula
to practice Yoga surrounded by others who also live from the heart. we cultivate the skills of self-observation and consistency as we work to bring all parts of ourselves into greater alignment.

we become adept at creating a dynamic, supportive,
evolving, resilient 'community' in our bodies, our hearts:
we learn to keep great company inwardly.

when we are supported in our efforts to align ourselves inwardly by the company we keep outwardly,

we come into deeper alignment
with everyone else - pulsing back to the
larger picture, the community around us~
which strengthens us as individuals within.

reminder from last month:

"is that what satisfies me,
this linking of the individual to the whole?
strange that in this tying together,
the solitary becomes more noticeable."
-maggie barrett

gratitude to all of you
who bring your gifts to this community.
