Anusara Yoga,
founded by John Friend, is a unique approach to hatha yoga where the spirit of the HEART powerfully blends with the precision of biomechanical ALIGNMENT and balanced energetic ACTION in the performance of asanas (yoga postures).

The word "anusara" originates from a line in the Tantric text called the Kularnava Tantra, "shaktipata-anusarena shishyonugraham arhati", which means: by entering the current of Divine Shakti's descent into the heart, the true disciple becomes capable of receiving grace. Anusara literally means to be in the flow. It is the current of the Divine, to flow with Grace. The philosophical basis of Anusara, as elucidated by Dr. Douglas Brooks, is called Rajanaka Yoga.

our practice of yoga provides the context
in which to watch ourselves move, breathe and think.

during the practice, when we listen and observe our breath,
we gather important information about our reactions to
challenging poses, situations and people.

we watch without judgment
[exactly how you'd watch your very best friend
work through machinations of his/her practice
or daily life experience: supportively, carefully, kindly.
we are aiming to watch ourselves with that sort of
observant, non-judgmental quality].

we begin to see how every experience reaches us inwardly.
ultimately these observations teach us how to s l o w l y
usher our experiences into our minds, hearts and emotions
in ways that inspire recognition of our own highest divine qualities
as well as those of the people and places around us.

this is the life-enhancing purpose and work of the practice:
to learn to create our responses and environments
rather than be slave to our reactions;

how to effectively and sweetly direct our attention to
cultivate our ability to be completely aware
[and not judgemental] of our thoughts, words, actions.

remember that what we see is intrinsically well-intentioned.
now we practice yoga and meditation to open to
that inherent goodness, acknowledge it within ourselves and others,
and think, speak and act, ever more conscientiously,
from that awareness.

again and always, our only aim is to choose to live
in ways that serve us and those around us.

blessings and gratitude for reading.
