Anusara Yoga, founded by John Friend, is a unique approach to hatha yoga where the spirit of the HEART powerfully blends with the precision of biomechanical ALIGNMENT and balanced energetic ACTION in the performance of asanas (yoga postures). The word "anusara" originates from a line in the Tantric text called the Kularnava Tantra, "shaktipata-anusarena shishyonugraham arhati", which means: by entering the current of Divine Shakti's descent into the heart, the true disciple becomes capable of receiving grace. Anusara literally means to be in the flow. It is the current of the Divine, to flow with Grace. The philosophical basis of Anusara, as elucidated by Dr. Douglas Brooks, is called Rajanaka Yoga. |

BLESSINGS to
Heather Stewart and Eric Stoneberg [our treasured teachers, friends, visionaries, inspirations] on the auspicious occasion
of your marriage-
may your life together
be as fulfilling and sweet
as your presences are to so many of us. last month we spoke of careful
observation:
the means by which we create a dynamic, supportive, evolving, resilient 'community' within our own bodies and our hearts. it is only when we're really observing that we can ask ourselves: what is my deepest, truest aim in this moment? this question is asked in any and every moment: from the simplest daily task
like stirring your coffee
to the choices you make about your relationships or your career. when we profoundly contemplate and cultivate this question [in practice as well as in our lives], we learn to ascribe appropriate meaning to every experience, interaction, conversation, task. by asking first what we really desire before we hypothesize about [and depend upon] outside barometers [others' opinions, financial valuations, etc.], we create an authentic 'community' within ourselves: we align within to recognize our own capacities and become more efficacious in our thoughts, words and actions. we recognize our desires as well as the ways in which we can refine ourselves. this recognition, when sustained (through the practice of yoga and any work that helps us cultivate our attention), is a transformative capacity to choose what is valuable. in Sanskrit this is known as VIMARSHA, the essential capacity of Consciousness for self-referral. in every moment we learn to choose our own experience to create a life of meaning. nothing happens to us.
we CHOOSE how to perceive and proceed in every situation. if we're always tuned in to our vision, we'll place ourselves
in ways that align with that vision.
enjoy the depth inherent
in your practice
during the summer months, with our gratitude.
