Anusara Yoga,
founded by John Friend, is a unique approach to hatha yoga where the spirit of the HEART powerfully blends with the precision of biomechanical ALIGNMENT and balanced energetic ACTION in the performance of asanas (yoga postures).

The word "anusara" originates from a line in the Tantric text called the Kularnava Tantra, "shaktipata-anusarena shishyonugraham arhati", which means: by entering the current of Divine Shakti's descent into the heart, the true disciple becomes capable of receiving grace. Anusara literally means to be in the flow. It is the current of the Divine, to flow with Grace. The philosophical basis of Anusara, as elucidated by Dr. Douglas Brooks, is called Rajanaka Yoga.

Anusara Yoga for New York City:
December at VIRAYOGA

*the relevance of your practice*
to learn why your yoga is so applicable to your life,
right now, stand up, face this screen,
then turn your front body to face left &
look here again.

fold your hands in prayer,
bend your knees into chair pose
  [utkatasana],
then twist your upper body toward this screen,
left elbow outside your right knee
[that's parivritta utkatasana].
belly against your thighs; breathe in, exhale.
just to breathe and keep your face soft
requires every bit of your attention right now.
*smile*
inhale hug your shins towards one another energetically
& widen your seat behind you,
exhale soften your tail down & feel the lift in your lower belly.
keeping that,
inhale spin open this way to lift your heart,
exhale root down into your feet & soften your eyes.
inhale up to stand.
do the other side to balance your body.

why is this experience relevant?
as you struggled to observe, breathe and align yourself,
you strengthened your attention
along with your
legs, abdominals, back, arms.
these are the muscles you use to
practice with confidence.

and in the midst of any challenging interaction,
as you struggle to observe, breathe and align yourself
[instead of reacting, giving up, freaking out],
you will strengthen your attention
along with your patience and trust in yourself.
these are the "muscles" you use to
live with confidence.

a burgeoning reaction can only
be eased by
breathing;
and your breath will reveal
more confidence in every moment.
