Anusara Yoga, founded by John Friend, is a unique approach to hatha yoga in which the spirit of the HEART powerfully blends with the precision of biomechanical ALIGNMENT and balanced energetic ACTION in the performance of asanas (yoga postures). The word "anusara" originates from a line in the Tantric text called the Kularnava Tantra, "shaktipata-anusarena shishyonugraham arhati." Anusara literally means to be in the flow, in the current of the Divine, flowing with Grace. The philosophical basis of Anusara, as elucidated by Dr. Douglas Brooks, is called Rajanaka Yoga. |

VIRAYOGINS IF YOU'D LIKE TO CONTINUE RECEIVING VIRAYOGA'S MONTHLY EMAIL, PLEASE RE-ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS TO THE LEFT OF THIS NOTE. ...our entire original mailing list was recently deleted... For this summer, let's revisit our roots. Anusara Yoga originates with "three A's": Attitude, Alignment and Action. The first "A", ATTITUDE, determines every endeavor. No amount of alignment or action will offer you freedom unless you put attention on your attitude first. Optimally, your attitude is a state of EASEFUL ATTENTION; relaxed yet attentive. [It might help to think about someone you know who interacts with you in this manner; authentically serene yet focused.] To cultivate this state, first notice [in your yoga practice or during your day], when your brain begins to dominate. Then you're not really listening, you're thinking or already reacting. Useful advice from a teacher of mine: QUICK TO LISTEN, SLOW TO ANSWER. [When you're thinking or reacting, you're less likely to breathe; and when not breathing, you're less likely to be attentive and more likely to be tense somewhere in your body.] When you notice your brain taking over, there is only one way to optimize your attitude. Pause and sense your whole body; LISTEN. Taking just one moment to sense your body, you'll notice where your brain has taken over [there's tension there]- and then you'll remember to INHABIT YOUR BODY by BREATHING FULLY. In that pause, you reawaken yourself and your attitude can move towards easeful attention.* Alignment and action will follow: You'll consider what will serve best without judging and act from a place of steadiness without rushing. Here's to the practice of easeful attention and the freedom it affords you in any moment. With respect and gratitude, Elena *This article about Mirror Neurons describes our internally-wired propensity for mirroring whatever's around us. With this consistent attitude of easeful attention, the tendency to imitate negativity weakens, while our capacity to reflect positive energy strengthens. |
