Founded by John Friend in 1997, Anusara Yoga presents a unique approach to hatha yoga
in which the spirit of your heart powerfully blends with your precise alignment and balanced action
through asana and meditation. The initial philosophical basis of the practice, continually elucidated
by Dr. Douglas Brooks, is called Rajanaka Yoga.

The word "Anusara" originates from a line in the Kularnava Tantra,
"shaktipata-anusarena shishyonugraham arhati."

Anusara offers a vision that is inclusive of all religious affiliations and requires only a willing heart..

Anusara Yoga for New York City:

VIRAYOGINS

Each of us has several habitual internal reactions to external events,
which often derail our easeful experience of any moment.

There is a way to become aware of these reactions,
offering us the potential for more patience, ease, and presence
[your yoga mat is a great context for this practice].

Practice separating your attention.

[ ? ]

To do this,
take momentary inner "snapshots" of
any aspect of your inner state + your outer experience
s i m u l t a n e o u s l y

eg.
your breathing right now + the surrounding sounds,

your thought + your facial expression,
your left lung and your right lung in any pose.

[these snapshots are the pause between
any event/sensory experience and your internal reaction].

This practice of separating your attention
reveals your internal reactions and helps you develop
-a supportive relationship with yourself inwardly
-a state of easeful attention
-a state of receptivity to what is actually happening
rather than the chaos of projecting what isn't happening.

If, as Gandhi implored, you are to
BE that change you wish to see in the world,
attentively, equanimously seeing all the tiniest parts of any moment
helps you to receive the whole and its big beneficence.

With great gratitude,
Elena

my mind is
a big hunk of irrevocable nothing which touch and
taste and smell and hearing and sight keep hitting and
chipping with sharp fatal tools
in an agony of sensual chisels i perform squirms of
chrome and execute strides of cobalt
nevertheless i
feel that i cleverly am being altered that i slightly am
becoming something a little different, in fact

myself
