Anusara Yoga,
founded by John Friend, is a unique approach to hatha yoga in which the spirit of the HEART powerfully blends with the precision of biomechanical ALIGNMENT and balanced energetic ACTION in the performance of asanas (yoga postures).

The word "anusara" originates from a line in the Tantric text called the Kularnava Tantra, "shaktipata-anusarena shishyonugraham arhati."

Anusara literally means to be in the flow, in the current of the Divine, flowing with Grace. The philosophical basis of Anusara, as elucidated by Dr. Douglas Brooks, is called Rajanaka Yoga.

SUMMER AT VIRAYOGA:

Cultivating Your Intuition

"Your thoughts are the
children of your emotions."

-Hugo Cory

e·mo·tion, n.
An intense mental state that arises subjectively
rather than through conscious effort and is
often accompanied by physiological changes.

to think, v.

To formulate in the mind;
To reason about or reflect on;
To judge; regard; believe; suppose;
expect; hope; intend; visualize; imagine;
To concentrate one's thoughts on:
“Think languor” (Diana Vreeland).

when you forget to breathe,
your emotions [located in your belly]
become thoughts [located in your brain]
without first being mediated, transmuted and
softened by your heart.

someday you'll live in your heart so often that
you'll notice an emotion forming in your belly
and breathe it into your heart before it
becomes a distracting thought or angry interaction.

now,
it's more likely that your emotions become thoughts readily,
and those thoughts become challenging moments,
so what's called for is the practice we've
explored in recent months.

first,
notice that your thoughts
[since they're manifestations of your mind],
aren't actually events, they're thoughts.

second,
inhale those various thoughts
[doubts/worries/fears/judgments],
one at a time, into the space of your HEART,
until you exist momentarily in silence.

that silence is the access to your intuition.

INTUITION is that momentary inspiration
- that little seed of silent awareness -
only noticeable when you soften a distracting emotion or thought
by inhaling/taking it into your heart.

INTUITION is the "knowing" that comes
from listening from your heart.

as one student pointed out, "weirdly unexciting."
exactly.  it's not meant to come with fanfare.
intuition exists subtly in your awareness.
you must be quiet enough to receive it and
patient enough to allow it to percolate, wordlessly,
 to reveal what needs revealing.
  don't get too excited when it comes,
simply watch, listen and NOTICE.

read, re-read and practice this all summer.
by the fall you should have some edifying observations.

with gratitude and respect,
enjoy your summer.
