Anusara Yoga, founded by John Friend, is a unique approach to hatha yoga where the spirit of the HEART powerfully blends with the precision of biomechanical ALIGNMENT and balanced energetic ACTION in the performance of asanas (yoga postures). The word "anusara" originates from a line in the Tantric text called the Kularnava Tantra, "shaktipata-anusarena shishyonugraham arhati", which means: by entering the current of Divine Shakti's descent into the heart, the true disciple becomes capable of receiving grace. Anusara literally means to be in the flow. It is the current of the Divine, to flow with Grace. The philosophical basis of Anusara, as elucidated by Dr. Douglas Brooks, is called Rajanaka Yoga. |

Anusara Yoga for New York City: January at VIRAYOGA |
||||
| january:
back to basics, real time, real practice.
right now, in your seat,
move your back away from the back of your chair.
i n h a l e
as you lengthen the sides of your body up
into your armpits, keeping that brightness,
e x h a l e and soften your eyes. again, inhale, this time lift the back of your heart...
and exhale open the front of your heart,
root your tail down into your chair.
this seated moment of breathing is the
truly demanding aspect of your practice. no matter how beginner or advanced your poses happen to be,
use that simple lengthening and breathing during
the next strenous moment today, everyday, in class, in life. as you continue to remember your breath
during arduous moments on your mat,
it becomes more efficient and edifying for you. the key: REMEMBER.
that is how you help your body slow and quiet down when you're working, creating, interacting. and each time you take that one breath during your day,
you help your body find your poses the next time you come to your mat.
here's to your breath,
your capacity for radiance.
with love, respect and gratitude,
elena, lynn and the staff of virayoga
