Anusara Yoga, founded by John Friend, is a unique approach to hatha yoga in which the spirit of the HEART powerfully blends with the precision of biomechanical ALIGNMENT and balanced energetic ACTION in the performance of asanas (yoga postures). The word "anusara" originates from a line in the Tantric text called the Kularnava Tantra, "shaktipata-anusarena shishyonugraham arhati." Anusara literally means to be in the flow, in the current of the Divine, flowing with Grace. The philosophical basis of Anusara, as elucidated by Dr. Douglas Brooks, is called Rajanaka Yoga. |

Greetings VIRAYOGINS The Fall message on this page asked you to observe how your practice of breathing enlists your HEART in the acts of opening, receiving, giving and KNOWING.
The KNOWING of which we speak is not of an intellectual sort; it's your heart's knowing. Your HEART'S intelligence can be defined as the ease
accessed when you remember
to breathe.
This intelligence is both strong and spacious. When you observe your breathing at work, in relationships, on long lines, in poses -
you'll sense that ease. It comes when you do nothing but observe for moments at a time.
Those are the moments when you're listening;
that's when your heart opens.
It is this opening that you might catch if you're paying attention as you practice observing.
May this seemingly small, highly significant practice
of observation shed light on both
your strength and your spaciousness. May this listening enhance your ferocity and your grace in every interaction- and every pose. With great respect and always gratitude, especially to all the teaching and desk staff
for making our VIRAYOGA possible every day. ~Elena [and Lynn, fearless guide and editor] |
