Anusara Yoga, founded by John Friend, is a unique approach to hatha yoga where the spirit of the HEART powerfully blends with the precision of biomechanical ALIGNMENT and balanced energetic ACTION in the performance of asanas (yoga postures). The word "anusara" originates from a line in the Tantric text called the Kularnava Tantra, "shaktipata-anusarena shishyonugraham arhati", which means: by entering the current of Divine Shakti's descent into the heart, the true disciple becomes capable of receiving grace. Anusara literally means to be in the flow. It is the current of the Divine, to flow with Grace. The philosophical basis of Anusara, as elucidated by Dr. Douglas Brooks, is called Rajanaka Yoga. |

VIRAYOGA
yogins, students, friends, family~ it is our honour and pleasure to announce our 2 year anniversary in february. giant gratitude from elena and lynn to michael sloan, heather stewart, our teachers and our desk goddesses. and thank you thank you all for your practice and your presence. *NAMASTE* last month we defined OUTER SPIRAL
[the fourth of the five principles of Anusara Yoga]: the action of expansion to create stability,
the rooting of the tailbone to create buoyancy in the heart,
anchoring the foundation to expand most fully from the focal point.
when we re-ground ourselves through outer spiral, we can then look within and outside of ourselves SIMULTANEOUSLY,
bringing us to the fifth and final principle:
ORGANIC ENERGY.
the final expression of the yoga; in which is inherent all four preceding principles. 1. OPEN TO GRACE
open to the potency of the situation, the pose
2. MUSCULAR ENERGY
draw into ourselves mentally, physically- check in 3. INNER SPIRAL
spiral in to make inward space for stability 4. OUTER SPIRAL
expand out to anchor ourselves, root our foundation outwardly 5. ORGANIC ENERGY
the moment of commencement:
now the yoga takes us to
the deepest experience of ourselves WITHIN-- as we simultaneously express ourselves OUTWARDLY.
* inner and outer spiral *
* muscular and organic energy * both sets of awarenesses are inseparable:
if we speak or act without first going inward to consider it,
we'll act impetuously and often inappropriately.
conversely, if we only retreat inside and never interact with the world,
we find ourselves too distanced, separate.
the point is: do both, equally, then express the delight [of the pose or the moment] organically. to quote heather stewart, teacher at virayoga:
organic energy is 'what makes the other stuff feel so good'
with organic energy, we can expand out only as much as we've gone in.
similarly, we can only teach what we've actually studied.
and in everyday life, we reach out most fully to family, friends, colleagues
who take us to the deepest parts of ourselves.
blessings
